إن طلب العلم صناعة: له مبادئه، وأصوله، وآدابه، وهي أكثر مما تحصى، إلا أن جملة من تلك المبادئ والأصول ما كانت بمثابة القواعد والأركان الأساسية، فهي للعلم بمنزلة الدعائم للبنيان، يدوم بثباتها، يزول بزوالها. وقد ألف أستاذنا الجليل، الشيخ المفتي سيف الإسلام (حفظه الله تعالى ورعاه) كتابا بالإنجليزية في بيان تلك القواعد، والذي رسمه لمعشر الطلاب المبتدئين، بجامعة خاتم النبيين، ونشرها منذ فترة طويلة. فلما دعت الحاجة إلى إعادته، أمرني بمراجعته، وكلفني بتهذيبه وتطويره وإعداده باللغة العربية، حتى يكون الإصدار الجديد مناسبا للمتوسطين، ويصلح تقريره في نصاب التعليم.

فكان عملي هذا معتمدا عليه، وهو يحتوي على خمسة أركان، يندرج فيها عدد من القواعد السلوكية والأصول الدراسية التي تبنى عليها الأحكام، وتحقق بإثباتها النتائج والمرام، وتعين على تكوين شخصية مثالية لطالب العلم الشرعي. فأوصيك يا طالب العلم —ونفسي أولا— بالاهتمام بهذه الأصول، فبها نصل إلى المطلوب، ونظفر بالمقصود، وإلا فمن حرم الأصول، حرم الوصول؛ فاقبل هذه الوصية ممن هو أحوج إلى الانتصاح بها منك.

ترجمة الشيخ المفتي سيف الإسلام

ولد الشيخ عام ١٩٧٤م، وحفظ القرآن الكريم وعمره ثلاث عشرة سنة، والتحق بدار العلوم العربية الإسلامية حيث درس الفنون العربية، وتلقى العلوم الإسلامية على مدى ست سنوات، وحصل على الشهادة العالمية، ونال من شيوخه الإجازات العامة والخاصة في الحديث. ثم قضى سنة في التخصص في الفقه الحنفي والتدريب في الإفتاء على يد الشيخ الأكبر المفتي شبير أحمد حفظه الله تعالى، وحصل على الإجازة فيه. وقد لازم أستاذه ومربيه الشيخ يوسف مطارة رحمه الله تعالى طوال إقامته بالجامعة، وتأثر به جدا، واستفاد منه علم الطريقة والحقيقة.

بعد أن تخرج الشيخ من دار العلوم، اشتغل بالتدريس في مدينته، برادفورد، إنكلترا، حيث أسس جامعة خاتم النبيين عام ١٩٩٦م، والتي أصبحت اليوم مركزا عالميا للتعليم الإسلامي. والشيخ رئيس التحرير لمجلة المؤمن، وله مصنفات عديدة في التفسير، والحديث، والفقه، والآداب، والإصلاح الإجتماعي والشخصي. وكانت له أياد بيضاء على مسلمي بريطانيا في خدمة الدين، وإنجاز الكثير من المشروعات العلمية، والتربوية، والروحية، وافتتاح المدارس والمعاهد التي تعمل تحت رعايته. وآثاره الطيبة منتشرة في طول البلاد وعرضها.

A person will face many different challenges throughout their life. However, the beauty of Islām lies in the mere fact that it has all the answers to every possible situation. A Muslim may be struggling to cope, yet the Holy Qur’ān and ahādīth are filled with antidotes to these struggles. As Muslims, we are encouraged to view our calamities as blessings.  More so, it is an opportunity for us to turn to Allāh Subhanahu wa ta’ala with a sincere heart and strengthen our īmān (faith).

During these uncertain times, the belief and īmān of Muslims around the globe are being tested. It is at times like this, that we are to hold firm to the guidance of our beloved Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam more than ever.

Once the commentary of Kitābul ʿIlm in Bukhāri was completed, we realised that this chapter is an entire topic in itself due to its fascinating and insightful perspective on knowledge. When compiling this commentary, there were many beautiful reminders as well as points of guidance for everyone’s personal life as well as their lifelong quest for knowledge. Therefore, the commentary of this chapter alone would be beneficial for all seekers of knowledge and the idea of publishing it as a separate book came to mind.

It is hoped that this book will be a means of inspiration and guidance for all students and teachers of Dīn as well as seekers of knowledge in general. May Allāh I accept all the efforts of those students who contributed in compiling this inspirational book, without them, this task would not have been possible. Amīn.

Islām attaches great value to students of Ilm (knowledge). Students are therefore required to adhere to certain etiquette when seeking Ilm. We learn the importance of this aspect through the example of our pious predecessors and scholars who illustrated excellency in Ādāb and Akhlāq of seeking knowledge.

As students of knowledge, we should learn from the advices given by Shaykh Mufti Saiful Islām Sāhib (may Allāh I preserve him and prolong his life) and follow his approach who is truly an inspiring teacher and a role model for all of us. Apart from him, there are many inspiring teachers whom we can learn from to rejuvenate Islamic etiquette in us. This book will guide the student of knowledge in achieving the excellent qualities of becoming an ideal student.

Having previously authored two educational books; “Hadeeth for Beginners” and “Du’ā for Beginners”, Shaykh Mufti Saiful Islām has endeavored to add to the series another exciting book titled “How well do you know Islām?”There are 300 multiple questions and answers to help you increase your knowledge on Islām!

It is with great sadness and regret that our youth are embroiled in worthless pastime and amusement which is gradually taking them away from the Deen and most drastically from our Creator Allāh Subhanahu wa ta’ala. Our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Seeking knowledge is compulsory upon every Muslim.” It is therefore very important that we educate ourselves, our loved ones, our children and our youth about Islām, Who our Creator is, and who Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was. If we were to truly realise the importance Islām places on knowledge and its virtues, then we will definitely be keen to learn and teach others. We would start with ourselves, our families, then our neighbours and the community at large.

It is the author’s hope to introduce this book to our young children in Islamic schools and Madrasahs so that each child or adult student can cherish the treasures of knowledge they will learn. I am confident that this book will be a very beneficial tool if it is included in the educational syllabus. The book is also ideal for the whole family to learn new knowledge and facts about Islām in an enjoyable way!

Allāh Subhanahu wa ta’ala describes divine knowledge in the Holy Qur’ān as a “Light”. Amongst the qualities of light are purity and guidance.
