In front of you is a commentary of Sūrah Saba compiled by Shaykh Muftī Saiful Islām Sāhib دَامَتْ بَرَكَاتُهٗ . This sūrah is especially relevant to our times. In our current times, Islām is subject to taunts and mockery and the message of tawhīd and the Hereafter is challenged. This sūrah was revealed at a time when the disbelievers of Makkāh were also challenging the message of Islām. It invites to belief by reminding people of what is to come in the Hereafter for the believers and disbelievers. It emphasises the message that success will only be achieved through believing in Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala and following Islām.

This sūrah reminds the disbelievers that just as they waited anxiously for the Prophet e to die so that his message would also end with him, they too would also die and then, on the Day of Judgement, Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala would settle all their differences. The lies that they used to deceive people with will become manifest on that day.

Man is ever arrogant, and when a bounty is conferred upon him, he attributes goodness to his own self rather than expressing gratitude for the blessings conferred upon him. Those who lived before them and disbelieved in Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala were also ungrateful, and they suffered the consequences of their evil actions.

Before you is the commentary of Sūrah Qamar. While one of the themes of this sūrah is about the historical event of the splitting of the moon by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, it also urges us to reflect on our current state. Many people today are similar in that they do not take heed of the great miracles of creation, such as the sky, sun, and moon, despite it being clear that this is intelligent design, and the universe could not have come together by itself. It is a cause for concern that atheism and disbelief today are so widespread in our society.

If one reads the sūrah while reflecting on its meaning, one can hope that the light of īmān will be rekindled, and then a concerted effort can be made to mend our ways before it is too late. The primary reason Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala mentions the incidents of previous nations and their punishment is for us to take heed and not follow the same path in their carelessness and rejection. Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala is the primal cause of all things existing. The heavens and the earth; from the angels with their splendour and grandeur of heavenly wings to the creation we see on earth; the winds that drive the clouds to the land that is dead and revives the earth after its death so that we may harvest the crops and fruit;  the seas which some are palatable and pleasant to drink whilst others are bitter; the ships that traverse the sea so that man is able to carry his heavy laden goods from one place to another without it being burdensome; in all these things are signs for the existence of a Creator.

Good and evil can never be alike, Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala mentions the qualities of the pious. A person who strives in the path of Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala to achieve taqwa can never be in the same category as a person who indulges in sins and has no care or concern for the Ākhirah. Through contemplating and reflecting on Allāh’ssubhanahu wa ta’ala signs, a person should be inspired to return back to their Creator, Who is even more magnificent than His creation.

Sūrah Fussilat speaks about the signs of Allāh’s SWT creation and how the heavens and the earth were created. Allāh SWT shows us many signs so that we may ponder and reflect; ultimately leading us back to the belief in a Creator. This sūrah also deals with the objections that the polytheists of Makkah would raise against the Prophet SAW.

The book of deeds, the kirāman kātibīn (the honourable angels), the limbs of a person’s own body and the earth will all bear witness for or against a person, on the Day of Judgement when all matters will be decided. Allāh SWT mentions regarding the punishment that will be meted out on the Day of Judgement and how a person’s own limbs and organs will testify against them. Allāh SWT also describes the former tribes and nations who were destroyed as a result of their defiance and rejection of faith.

Sūrah Hāqqah’s main focus is the daunting day which is inevitable and will definitely take place, yet we prepare for it the least with little concern. This daunting day is Yawmul Qiyāmah, the Day of Judgement. The day where there’s no escape, nowhere to run and hide. The day where all will be revealed, and man will be facing the Almighty being questioned about the way he lived his life. We need to remember this world is temporary, the body our soul resides in is temporary.

We’ve been given all the signs and we’ve heard about the stories of the previous nations, of those who believed and those who disbelieved. The nations who disbelieved and rejected the truth were destroyed due to their sheer ignorance. Those who brought faith were saved from Allāh’s wrath and were given glad tidings.

Sayyidah Āishah stated that when the subject of poetry was mentioned to Allāh’s Messenger, he said, “It is speech, and what is good in it is good, and what is bad is bad.” (Tirmidhī)

It is hoped that this will be of benefit for the young and old. The nature of human beings is that they often enjoy being taught knowledge and wisdom in the form of stories and examples and this is the method utilised in the holy Qur’ān as well. This method can often be more effective and fruitful than simply giving commands.
