This sūrah is mainly focused on striving and spending in the path of Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala. It is important to remember that the wealth that we have in this dunya is not ours, to begin with, yet Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala beautifully says: “Who is it that would loan Allāh a beautiful loan so that Allāh may multiply it for him.” (57:11).  

This life is ultimately an illusion that will be over within a split second. The luxury cars, big mansions and designer clothes are all but temporary. Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala accurately describes this world like “a commodity of deception.” (57:20).

Sūrah Dukhān eloquently narrates the story of Sayyidunā Mūsā alayhis salaam and how he tried so hard to get Fir’awn and his people to believe. It is reminiscent of the same struggle that Sayyidunā Nūh alayhis salaam had with his people, and he poured his heart out to Allāh subhanahu wa ta’ala. His people showed arrogance, so did the Banū Isrā’īl and so did the people of Makkah when our holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam invited them to Islām.

The sūrah goes into detail with regards to the various signs which took place at the time of Sayyidunā Mūsā alayhis salaam, to get his people to take heed. They were in denial and arrogance and similarly was the case of the people of Makkah.

One of the aspects which differentiates a Muslim from a non-Muslim is the belief in the Ākhirah (Hereafter). Muslims believe that they will be held accountable for wrongdoings and rewarded for good. This is the core aspect of the message in the holy Qur’ān to which Allāh I draws our attention throughout so that we believe in Him. In reinforcing this message, Allāh I describes extensively the scenes of the Day of Judgement.

Sūrah Mursalāt discusses in detail the catastrophic scenes on the Day of Judgement, when the record of deeds of each and every individual will be laid open in front of them. The shock and horror of that day will be extraordinary.
