Sayyidah Āishah stated that when the subject of poetry was mentioned to Allāh’s Messenger, he said, “It is speech, and what is good in it is good, and what is bad is bad.” (Tirmidhī)

Sayyidunā Ubay ibn Ka’b narrated that Allāh’s Messenger said, “Some poetry contains wisdom.” (Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd)

In the book Reflections, a wonderful and uplifting collection of poetry is presented. May Allāh bless all the virtuous poets who, in every generation, inspire us to remember our Lord, elevate our spirits, raise our aspirations, and deepen our love for the beloved of Allāh.

The Prophet is reported to have said:

اَلْكَلِمَةُ الْحِكْمَةُ ضَالَّةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَحَيْثُ وَجَدَهَا فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا

“The wise statement is the lost property of the believer, so wherever he finds it, then he is more worthy of it.” (Tirmidhī)

The book before you – Lost Treasures, is a collection of beneficial stories, poems and statements gathered by Shaykh Muftī Saiful Islām حفظه الله. It is hoped that this will be of benefit for the young and old. The nature of human beings is that they often enjoy being taught knowledge and wisdom in the form of stories and examples and this is the method utilised in the holy Qur’ān as well. This method can often be more effective and fruitful than simply giving commands.

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam mentions in a Hadeeth narrated by Imām Bukhāri Rahmatullah Alaih that “Indeed some form of poems are full of wisdom.” From this Hadeeth we can understand that poems have many points to reflect upon and take lessons from.

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was not a poet but he liked poems, which had good meanings. He himself encouraged the great poet Sayyidunā Hassān Ibn Thābit Rahmatullah Alaih to recite couplets in Masjid Nabawi in order to defend Islām from anti-Islamic allegations. He stated, “O’ Allāh Subhanahu wa ta’ala, help him through the Roohul Quds” (arch-angel Jibreel).

The poems in this book should have a great impact upon the readers and should help change our lives in accordance with the commands of Allāh Subhanahu wa ta’ala and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
